DxOMark’s lab evaluation process just certified that the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have the best smartphone cameras it’s ever tested — that doesn't make them flawless though.
The amazing thing about the cameras is the ability to focus and produce high revolution photos in everyday activity even in extreme lighting situations.
The iPhones excel on these occasions, capable of accurate autofocus, superb details in ultra lighting situations, and superior performance in the faux-bokeh category everyone is so hot on lately. The camera zoom in of the Plus also stands out, though in smartphones that still remains a bit like a dog walking on its hind legs — it’s amazing that it works at all.
It surpass its nearest competitors, HTC U11 and the Pixel which topped the charts until now in most situations. Dim light detail and HDR excellence gave the iPhone an edge, and its general background blur feature wins handily (especially in the Plus).
DxOMark includes a lot of explanation and many tester photos to show the difference from it predecessors. One in particular stood out to me, however:
There’s still more to improve. The autofocus, while accurate (which really is the most essential part), is not absolutely the fastest. Video, while okay, is said to fall behind the Pixel’s. Portrait mode still produces artifacts around the borders of the blur, but far more subtle than the ones on the Pixel.
It’s however a win by Apple, but the competition is about to strike back: the new Pixel is on the way and set to arrive soon. Obviously in the test, smartphone ratings are usually made into the camera quality reviews, and Google knows that as well as anyone else. We can't wait to see what will be brought to the table on October 4, when it’s set to be debut.
